Styling Journey with NOEL CALEB : Part Three

3rd styling session! March 18

The 3rd lesson is to help style the flashmob dance team for the new collection launch.
The venue is at a dance studio.

So there are about 30 dancers and the task is to dress them up according to the limited clothings NC brought. The dancers were instructed to bring afew pieces of clothing that they think is suitable (black leggings or pants, and tops) so we can style them accordingly.

Sounds easy? HAH!
First of all, there are limited pieces in limited sizes.
The dancers are much much older than me(older by at least 5/6yrs, some are even in their fifties!), and some of them are rather doubtful of our abilities(because we are merely just styling apprentices?).
The incredibly tough part - There are some who also insists on what they want to wear and want only what they think it's best for them.
So not only we have to give our viewpoints, we have to style them up, listen to what they want and reassure them that they look fabulous. It's like treating them as our customers.

It's quite tough for me actually cause once someone just insists on their way like for example they want another piece that either don't suit them or don't have their size or even keep on adding all the unnecessary items or accessories that we didn't suggest, I find it hard to convince them and became  frustrated and dumbfounded.
2 of the other styling apprentices, Cadence and Megha is very good with dealing them. Very good communication skills and I think it is also due to their age (able to relate to them easier?)
There are some nice ones who accepts our advice with no problems.

After the styling process, our mentors look through and see which looks made the cut and which didn't. After that they show us their dance rehearsal, adjustments are being made to the clothing again.
Then it's our short discussion time. Rana gave us her valuable advice. She said that it's important to listen to them but at the same time give us our advice and show them that we are the stylists rather than them, because some people are used to what they wear and what they think is the best for them and find it hard to change it. What they think is good for them might not be the case. 

So all in all, it's a good experience.
I still have plenty to learn. Plenty!

2nd styling session! March 10

Im pretty excited for the 2nd session. Why? because we get to see the behind-the-scenes of the photoshoot for the new collection - Teddy Girls.WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

I decided to take a taxi to the studio and I'm so unlucky to get a horrible taxi driver who tried to earn more money from me by going rounds and rounds into the wrong street despite knowing where it is.

Price hike in Taxi fares + Despicable Taxi drivers = Boycott Taxis please.

And I was terribly sick on that day. *cough*1stday.

Well, back to this, our mission for this session is to observe the behind-scenes and do our "homework".

1. What is the detail on the particular piece(s)? Colour, trimming, fabric etc… anything that caught your eyes?

3. If you’re styling the pieces, would you have done differently, and why?

4. What have you learn from Session 2?

When I arrived, the photoshoot had already begun. (because I was supposed to reach there later)

I saw the pieces hanging on the clothes rack and went to take a look and feel the material (afterall, we have to do our homework, right?), at first I was unimpressed by the colour scheme cause it look dull in general and I have no idea how to match the clothes. But when I saw how Rana and Eileen style it, it was like magic unfolding one by one, I was amazed by the results. (refer to one of the points I made in Styling Journey Part One)

Sadly we were not allowed to take any photos, but it's alright, being there is awesome enough.

My Homework!

Styling Journey with NOEL CALEB : Part One

I was supposed to post entry every week regarding this. AND I DIDN'T! :O

Well, What's that?

Im one of the 5 lucky ones who got chosen by NOEL CALEB (One of our homegrown fashion labels, yes Singapore!) to attend their styling class.

Well, I initially thought it's just one styling class, but it ended up to be FOUR styling class and it's a competition. I got to know that at the end of the first class, the winner get to be their styling apprentice after all the classes!

So, while I had the mindset that it's just A styling class, and just end up to be four, it just get better...being a styling apprentice!!!

My first lesson is on 2 March.

We are going to meet the founder and the stylist and they will be introducing their label and teaching us how to style. We were supposed to bring 3-4 pieces of clothing (either top or bottom) and use it to style with the NOEL CALEB collection.

The location is at an apartment unit. So while I was gleaming at the thought of meeting the founder of the label and learning styling with the experts, my mum got suspicious and told me to be careful cause they are real-life cases of girls being tricked into going to apartment for something and well, you get the idea. Because of that, I was wary about it. (You can't blame me for that, cause I have yet to seen them)

Well, I arrived on time to see all ladies there. And Im the youngest! haha.

There are 4 apprentices, 3 interns, and our mentors.

Our mentors are Eileen, the founder of Noel Caleb and Rana, Stylist and Fashion Blogger.

 Rana was saying that alot of people will either ignore of look at this piece and just put it back, but it's actually a very flattering versatile top.

 

It's a long 'dress' top.

 

Look, you can loop around  your neck or to one side of the shoulder.

 

Rana explained that adding a piece of clothing will change the whole outlook.

 

Eileen, the founder explaining that every piece have their own concept design, material and feel and most of the people don't know or understand about it. This piece was supposed to have a 3D effect.

After explaining and the demonstration, we set off to do our own styling with some advice from our mentors!

Here are my looks! 

(I look weird though, cause I went for eyebrow threading recently in Feb, thats why I look so weird in all of the photos previously. Pic credits to Noel Caleb)

 

1st look: I choose the pink polka dots top, the blazer and my own black pants.

2nd look: (Not shown) Wore the versatile top with the blazer.

 

3rd look: Rana choose this for me! She said that I have beautiful shoulders, so I should "show off" my shoulders. Haha.

4th look: Interesting dress! Rana choose this for me even though I find the colour of the dress uninteresting but Im ok with it after that.

 

5th look: Oh, the vest is so nice! Love it when she add the vest.

Some tips I learnt:

1) Try to figure out which is your "best" part of body and flaunt it!

2) Don't underestimate the power of accessories, they make a great difference but do choose the right one/ approriate one. 

3) Anything can be your accessories, even your hair colour! (:

4) Don't overdo it. Too much colours and texture makes you look "messy".

5) A boring looking piece hanging on the rack at the store might not look so tacky afterall. It might surprises you so try it if you can!
